FVG3 PEDEMONTANA CYCLE ROUTE

The route runs across the region from Sacile to Gorizia–Nova Gorica (Slovenia), following the natural transition between the plain and the Alpine foothills. Covering approximately 180 km, it offers a varied cycling experience through natural landscapes, historic towns and agricultural areas.

Along the way, cyclists pass through Maniago, internationally renowned for its knife-making tradition; Toppo, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy; Gemona del Friuli, a medieval town where history blends with street art and contemporary architecture; and Cividale del Friuli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its Lombard art.

The route also crosses some of the region’s most important wine-producing areas, where cyclists can discover and taste wines from the Grave, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Isonzo and Collio DOC zones, thanks to the many wineries located along or near the cycleway.

A short distance from the FVG3 route lie the villages of Polcenigo, Poffabro, Venzone and Gradisca d’Isonzo, all included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and easily reachable via connecting cycle routes.

MAGREDI SCENIC CIRCULAR ROUTE (R004)

A ride that allows you to enter the territory of the Magredi, a vast protected natural area immersed in the landscape of the western Friulian plain.

The Magredi is a large area of the Friulian plain whose soil consists of large pebbles, gravel, sand, and little earth. While over many centuries much of the Magredi areas have been cultivated, the vast triangular portion between the Cellina and Meduna streams has remained partly as the first people who inhabited Friuli after the last glaciation found it: a kind of whitish heathland with little grass and some shrubs. This almost lunar landscape has an unexpected naturalness and an intense charm, similar to what you feel when looking at the sea or a lake. The wide horizons that can be enjoyed crossing this territory are unique spectacles and getting to know the nature of a seemingly arid and desolate land is an experience to try at least once.

CELLINA RIVER SCENIC LOOP (R003)

The route follows the course of the Cellina with views of the Piancavallo and Cansiglio mountains. The former Malnisio hydroelectric power station is a unique cultural stop along the way.

Starting from Marsure, the route passes through San Martino and reaches Montereale Valcellina. This cycling itinerary offers a broad and evocative overview of the Friulian Dolomites. Some moderately demanding sections add a touch of challenge, well rewarded by the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

The route follows the scenic course of the Cellina stream, a place deeply connected to the history and development of hydroelectric power. Along the way, the former Malnisio Hydroelectric Power Station, now a technology museum, provides a unique cultural stop.

Cycling toward Montereale Valcellina, the itinerary crosses the Magredi of the Cellina, offering full immersion in the natural character of this area. As the ride continues, the stream becomes increasingly dramatic, flowing between rock walls rising up to 50–60 meters high.

The loop closes by returning to Marsure along the Pedemontana FVG3 cycle path, with striking views of the Piancavallo and Cansiglio mountains.

MOUNTAIN VILLAGE LOOP ROUTES (R005)

Starting from Maniago, the route enters the striking gorge of the Colvera stream, riding between steep rock walls and flowing water. It leads to the ancient village of Poffabro, a true jewel of mountain architecture. Here it is worth leaving your bike in the main square and exploring the narrow cobbled streets on foot.

Back on the bike, the route descends toward the picturesque mountain village of Navarons, birthplace of the Friulian poet Novella Cantarutti. After crossing the Meduna River, and following the Pedemontana cycle path (FVG3), you reach Toppo, with its characteristic stone houses. The itinerary then continues toward Meduno before returning to Maniago along the FVG3.

THE PATRIARCH AND THE VINE CYCLE CIRCUIT (R020)

A cycling route that starts from Spilimbergo, the Renaissance city of mosaics, and leads into the striking natural landscapes of the Magredi of the Meduna and Cellina rivers.

This circular itinerary begins in Spilimbergo, renowned for its Renaissance heritage, charming historic centre and castle. From here, the route opens onto the stark and evocative landscapes of the Magredi of the Meduna and Cellina, vast areas characterized by pebbles, gravel, sand and minimal soil.

The ride continues through Provesano, where a stop at the Church of San Leonardo is possible, and then on to Rauscedo, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for viticulture, home to the Cooperative Nurseries. The loop then closes with the return to Spilimbergo.

In Rauscedo, around 60% of Italy’s vine cuttings are produced through a carefully controlled and fully traceable production process. These vineyards supply much of the wine market, particularly for Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Prosecco.

Recommended dish: guinea fowl with polenta.

RENAISSANCE ROUTES (R019)

A cycle-cultural route that starts in Spilimbergo and develops in territories enriched, during the Renaissance period, by valuable works of Friulian and transalpine artists.

In Spilimbergo the Renaissance has left indelible marks throughout the historic center: the Cathedral, the Castle, the public buildings, the outer walls of bourgeois houses… everything is color and History! During the ride, it is recommended to stop at the churches, small treasure chests where you can admire works of great artistic value. The churches in the hamlets of Vacile and Gaio preserve early works by Pordenone, as do the two churches in Valeriano. In Travesio, in the ancient Pieve di San Pietro, the fresco of the apse is one of the best works of Pordenone. In the church of Lestans there are instead the mannerist frescoes by his successor and artistic heir, Pomponio Amalteo. On the hills of Castelnovo del Friuli, in the Costa locality, is the sixteenth-century Villa Sulis which houses the collection of local decorated ceramics made by a local furnace in the 16th-17th centuries.
